ABOUT SUNDOG
Preparedness for
Everyone
The meteorological term for a Sundog is "Parhelion". Caused by the way light interacts with the ice crystals in the air, the sun's rays are refracted into this stunning halo or multiple sun display. Most Arctic cultures interpret Sundogs to mean that a significant change is going to come.
Unlike rainbows which usually form after a shower, Sundogs are generally precursors to a snowstorm. Yet, no culture equates Sundogs as negative omens. If one is prepared for a storm, they can find enjoyment in the snow.
The goal of Sundog Self Reliance is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to find joy in all situations. And when the storm gets harsh, not to become overwhelmed by the dark and cold. The more you know, the less you fear.

OUR INSTRUCTOR
Meet Dustin
I grew up in a family where vacations meant loading up the car and heading into the woods. Backpacking, camping, and spending time in the woods were just part of life.
That early connection to the outdoors eventually shaped both my professional career as a SERE Specialist and my academic path. By earning degrees in Anthropology and Geospatial Technologies, I’ve continued my deep interest in the relationship between humans and the environments we live in; not just historically, but right now. How we interact with nature, how we use green spaces, and time outside matters more than most of us realize.
I believe that our relationship with nature isn’t optional; it’s foundational. Whether it’s a multi-day backpacking trip or a short walk through a park, time outdoors changes how we think, how we feel, and how we fit into to the world around us.
